Old Arborians - History

Inspired by the Montessori Philosophy of child centred learning, our headmistress Wendy Compson founded the school in 1982.
The basis of the Montessori Method is the development of a child's own initiative and natural abilities, especially through practical play.

It stresses the importance of adapting the child's learning environment to his developmental level, and of the role of physical activity in absorbing academic concepts and practical skills.

The school (originally Cherry Trees nursery) started out with a small group of children and was based within our Headmistress’s own home.

Very quickly the word spread and within a term there were twenty children within the nursery.
The house soon became too small to accommodate the evergrowing number of children that were attending the nursery. This prompted a move into a local independent school with purpose built accommodation for all the children.

By 1984 the current school, situated within 8 acres of beautiful countryside in the heart of Suffolk, was purchased and opened with children ranging from 2 ½ to 6 years old.
Since then the school has continued to grow and now cares for over 250 boys and girls aged from 3 months to 11 years old.

In September 2009 the school was given a new name, Arbor Preparatory. The Nursery remained as Cherry Trees Montessori Nursery.
Both the nursery and the school continue to be based on the founding principles of Maria Montessori, providing both a stimulating environment in which to learn, and exceptional pastoral care.

A place where children learn how to learn - with outstanding results.
